Seal Hunting Essay - 1353 Words
The seal hunt has been a controversial topic in Canada for many years. The argument over it is if it should be allowed and continued, or stopped once and for all. The species of seals killed are the Harp Seals. Most of the harp seals killed are 12 days old to 3 months old because that is when they have the most fur and are more defenseless compared to an adult seal. However, those are also the seals that are going to grow up and breed for the harp seal population when all the old ones pass away. So when a sealer clubs and slaughter a baby seal, youââ¬â¢re basically not only killing 1 seal, but also maybe even a whole potential family. The government supports the hunt, and the people who are actually killing the seals are called ââ¬Å"Sealers.â⬠â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Inuit favor adult ring seals, while sealers hunt for baby harp seals usually. A letter by Arnaituk M. Tarkik, an Inuit man, clearly states his opposition. He writes, ââ¬Å"We are skillful hunters who hunt adult animals for food, that is not the same as bashing a pup, which canââ¬â¢t move, over the head.â⬠And ââ¬Å"in fact, if the seal hunt stopped, we would benefit the most. There would be 180,000 more seals left for us to eat when they are a few years older.â⬠So as you can see, whether itââ¬â¢s Inuitââ¬â¢s or Celebrities, everybody rather then the government and sealers want this barbaric slaughter to finish once and for all. After hearing so much negative effects the seal hunt has on people, imagine how cruel the seals have it. Baby seals are being clubbed and shot for really no reason at all. A reason why sealers argue that the hunt is beneficial because seals provide a good source of omega-3, the reality is you can get omega-3 without killing an innocent life. Omega-3 can come from other natural sources like walnuts and flax seeds. Also, after a seal is skinned most of the seal goes to waste. The fur is sold globally and the oil is sold as a health supplement. 80 % of the Blubber is discarded, and the meat is left to rot on the ice. If people are going to kill 12-day-old defenseless seals, they should at least make sure that the whole seal is used. Do you agree with Milton Friedmanââ¬â¢s (1970) claim that: ââ¬Å"the only responsibility of business is to increase its profitsâ⬠? Today we live in a world were companies are major actors and influence society on many levels. This is why ethics were brought into the business world. Ethical enterprises follow certain values and moral beliefs and were created with the supposed intention of using that influence in a positive way and protect what surrounds them, whether it is the people who work for the company, the rest of society, the environment etc. Ethics helps companies distinguish whatââ¬â¢s wrong or right in a certain situation and act upon it. It bases itself on the idea that a corporation is somewhat responsible for how it affects others, henceâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Many cosmetic brands like Lush or The Body Shop chose to ban animal testing and adopt a ââ¬Ëcruelty freeââ¬â¢ policy that doesnââ¬â¢t harm anyone during testing. The Body Shop even took it a step further by having the same testing that is usually practiced on animals done to a volunteering actress in the window of one of the ir shop to try and sensitize more people to the situation. (The Body Shop, 1992) The company used the influence it had to promote a cause that was important to them and raised awareness on the subject. This is why the installment and promotion of positive values is important. Managing by values was created to help incorporate those in the way the business is run, and benefits a company in many ways. Not only does it promote a healthy view of the brand but it also helps tie up different departments together and builds up the employeeââ¬â¢s attachment and loyalty to the company. And although managing by values isnââ¬â¢t the same as corporate ethics, they are both linked, and the improvement of one helps the establishment of the other. This form of management proves that companies are not the evil they can sometimes be portrayed as. They can be humane, do the right things and project a positive image. (Dolan et. Al., 2006) But this is not always the case. Many debate on the true intentions of socially responsible businesses and question the necessity of involving ethics into the business world. How To Nurse A Hangover Essay - 777 Words
Disclaimer: This information is for persons of legal drinking age. If you are 21 are older please drink responsibly. Do not operate any vehicle while intoxicated. Thank you. Introduction: Maybe hangovers are natures way of telling us that too much alcohol is not good for us. Chances are, if you drink alcohol, at some point in your life you have drank way too much of it. When one drinks like that, one must be prepared for the consequences. We all have our own private understanding for that dreadful feeling. Nobody has come up with a way to treat a hangover, but here are some steps to minimize the pain at least until the next party. Sometime you will know in advance that one night will be a particularly sobriety-challenged evening. Hereâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Bourbon drinkers ingest eight times the amount of congeners as do gin drinkers. Red wine has more congeners than white wine does, so consider having fish, rather than steak for dinner. Step 2: Plan for the evening. Now that youve chosen your poison, adopt these strategies regarding mixers and other pitfalls: According to Dr. Consiglio from Mens Health magazine, carbonation speeds alcohol absorption, so consider mixing drinks with water instead of the fizzies. Stay away from sweet tropical drinks, like zombies and pina coladas, and avoid sugary foods like cookies, cake and chocolate while drinking. Sweet flavors make it difficult to know how much alcohol you are taking in, and some people feel that the combination makes ones head spin. Step 3: Safeguard against gross over-indulgence. Its difficult to keep your wits about you when drinking heavily, but if you can remember, keep these things in mind. Disappearing into the kitchen for a big glass of water between alcoholic drinks may be the single best thing that you can do for yourself all evening. Milk and dairy products (and any other high-fat foods) also retard absorption of alcohol, so eat those crackers and cheese that your gracious host put out. Why not pace yourself for the evening, rather than standing near the keg until it runs dry? ââ¬Å"Jacob Michael Craig Debruno! â⬠, My sister screamed as she was sprayed with water from the hose attachment of the sink which I had rigged just minutes before. ââ¬Å" What do you want now? â⬠I replied innocently, doing my best to hold back laughter. Make no mistake the trickery was in no way a one way affair. It seemed to be a daily occurrence in our house growing up, as my sisters and I argued about almost everything. We fought over the remote, who could have ââ¬Å"shotgunâ⬠(the front seat), and even who got to eat first; I soon made that a non issue. Our relationship would change immensely in the future. Through middle school I dealt with walking down the hallway in the highschool and having all my oldest sisters friends say, ââ¬Å" O look its Susanââ¬â¢s little brother .â⬠My other sister Melanie even told some of her friends that my name was Alberto and that I only spoke Spanish. O but it only got better when they had friends come over. I would get the works from my sister and her friends playing spoons at the kitchen table, ââ¬Å"Alberto will you make me a taco?â⬠one of them would say. As we got older and I got into highschool things began to change. My oldest sister Susan had graduated, moved out, and went off to college to study Business. Having my sister move away immediately affected me. Besides the fact that I had to ride the bus I found despite all the arguing my sister and I did that I truly missed her when she left. I finally realized what that relationship really meant to me. I played football so I got to know a lot of the upperclassmen very quickly during two a days and the rest of the season. I received tons of comments from my friends and especially the upperclassmen on how good looking my sisters were which was a monstrous annoyance. Now im a senior in highschool and everything has changed. Now I tower over all of my sisters and I no longer get treated like Alberto or Susanââ¬â¢s little brother. Susan has finished grad school at Notre Dame and Megan is currently in school as well. We have become closer and although we still argue at times, they never leave my house without a hug. I am truly thankful for my three sisters. As we have grown and developed to whom we are today, our relationship has concurrently grown into what it is today. We have always been a family, and we will always be friends.
